What Is Sedation Dentistry?

It’s not at all unusual if you feel some anxiety about going to the dentist. More than 75% of American adults have some form of dental fear. If you are one of the many patients who suffer from dental anxiety or are undergoing a lengthy procedure, you may benefit from our safe, effective sedation options. With sedation, patients who have avoided dental visits for years can receive the care they deserve.

We offer anxiolytics like Valium for patients who need it.

Types of Sedation

At Prestige Family Dentistry, we offer several sedation options. During your consultation with Dr. Kashkouli, she will review your medical history and make a recommendation for which option works best for you.

Nitrous Oxide: Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help you relax. Nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” is one option for those patients with mild anxiety.  This is the most common form of sedation in dentistry. It’s easy to administer and wears off quickly, so patients are able to safely leave the office on their own.

Oral Conscious Sedation (Anxiolysis): This is a pill that is administered orally and provides a deeper level of relaxation than nitrous oxide. This form of sedation is appropriate for those with moderate or severe dental anxiety. Most patients find that they have little memory of the appointment and doze through it.  Patients need to have an escort to and from the dental office in this case.

If you put off seeing a dentist because of your apprehensive feelings, you may benefit from one of these options.  With our friendly staff, cozy surroundings, music, pillows and blankets,  you’ll have lots of reasons to relax. At Prestige Family Dentistry, we will do all that we can to make sure you feel at ease during your entire appointment and will ensure you that your treatment remains anxiety-free with sedation dentistry.
